Types of Throwing Stance
The first step to learn how to throw darts correctly is knowing how to stand in the right position. Most beginners don’t know that the right position of their body plays a significant role in their consistency.
So let’s take a look at the throwing stances!
The Forward Stance
This is also called front-facing stance as players face the dartboard with the front of their body. It is a quite difficult position to throw darts since your toes should be parallel and touches the throw line. There is a tendency to lose balance since you get a little scope for leaning forward.
However, you have to choose the right position that makes you comfortable to take your shots.
The Side Stance
It is one of the most popular stances among dart players. The dominant foot of your need to be placed on the edge of the throw line. If you’re right-handed then the right foot will be on the forward and the left foot will be behind your right foot. Just reverse the rules, if you’re left-handed.
The same thing goes with your hand, if you’re right-handed then the right hand will be on forward. If you’re lefty then your left hand will be on forward.
Additionally, you need to face the dartboard with the side of your body that will improve your throwing.
The Angeled Stance
It is a mixture of both forward and side position rules but not pointing to the dartboard directly. You need to follow the same rules that the dominant leg will be on the forward and the less dominant leg will be behind that.
You can even invent your own stance through experiments while playing. However, we recommend that you divide your body weight into a 60/40 ratio.
Types of Grips
The next step for learning how to throw darts is knowing how to hold the dart in your hand. This is all about how softly or hardly you should hold it and how many fingers you should use to have the perfect grip.
We’ve seen a lot of beginners who actually don’t know how to hold the dart, They put a lot of pressure on the fingers and hold it with too much force. On the other hand, some hold it too loosely that impacts the speed and accuracy.
Well, there are 4 different ways to hold the dart. These grips are divided by the fingers that are used in these grips. Let’s take a look at all the grips!
Two Fingers Grip
It is like you’re holding a pen with your thumb and index finger. This is one of the easiest grips that you can use at your beginner level. However, it is not preferable for advance level players.
Three Fingers Grip
This is one of the most popular and admirable grips among the players. For mastering this grip, you have to hold it with your thumb, index, and middle finger. You can gain a lot of control in your throws by using this grip.
Four Fingers Grip
For most beginners, this grip is quite hard to master. To learn this grip, you need to use every finger except the pinkie. This grip offers enough control and support but disrupts your aim also.
Five Fingers Grip
In this grip, you need to use all of your fingers to hold the dart. It is a tricky grip to master but once you learn it, you’ll gain a high level of control over your finger.
Tips and Trick for Grip
For mastering these grips, here we’ve shared some tips and trick that you may find helpful :
Always keep in mind that the big barrel requires more fingers and the small barrel requires few fingers. Do not grip at the flight or tip of the dart.
As we said, you shouldn’t hold the dart too tightly or too loosely. You just need enough tight grip to hold it perfectly.
Then you need to focus on your shoulder and elbow as you have to create a 90-degree angle with your elbow from the eye level.
Always try to aim your target to the bullseye of the dartboard. If you aim at the left or right side, you’ll end up scoring a poor throw.
Lastly, you can use your dominant eye which is the same side of your dominant hand. Try to look at the dartboard with your dominant eye open and aim the bullseye.
Releasing The Dart
The final step of how to throw darts is knowing how to release your dart accurately. You may think what’s the special matter in it? just throw the dart to the board, but it is not. This is a quite challenging task to do.
Let’s see, how we can pull it up!!
Using Your Hand and Wrist
You need to pull your hand slightly back while throwing and use your hand, wrist, and elbow for getting speed. Try to keep your shoulder straight and put more weight on your dominant feet.
For taking a perfect shot, do not try to lean on any side, always try to keep your body straight. You’ll just move your arm while throwing.
Snapping Your Wrist
If you want to throw your dart into a specific area then you need to make sure that your wrist does not go downward. You have to snap your wrist forward while throwing. Since the downward snap will affect your accuracy.
Professional dart players often do the wrist snap for increasing the acceleration of the dart. It creates more accuracy and consistency.
This is a simple and easy rule that you should let your arm maintain the throwing motion after you release the dart. Try to keep your arm holds in the air for a moment as it will help you to maintain a good follow-through.
For getting better at dart you need to be consistent and have to practice every single day. The more you practice, the better you will be.
Try to join in a dart league or go to the local pub in your area and play some friendly match or invite your friends to come your home to play.
